"outfront" tonight we have breaking news with major developments in the search for the gunman who killed colorado's prison chief. at this hour investigators from colorado are headed to wise county, texas. it's about 45 miles from ft. worth. they're going there to see whether a man who led police today on a high speed car chase is the same person who killed tom clemens on tuesday night. the chase ended with the suspect crashed into a semi, left his car and opened fire on police, injuring a deputy. we have a reporter in wise county, texas, to night. ed, why do police think this suspect might be related to tom clemens' horrific murder? >> reporter: well, the car that the suspect in this particular case was driving was a black boxy cadillac. what's interesting is this car had two different colorado license plates as well. so obviou

debate. senate majority leader harry reid announcing the assault weapons ban authored by california senator dianne feinstein will not be included in the democratic gun control legislation that currently is working its way through the chamber. instead reid says feinstein's proposal will have, quote, an opportunity for a vote, possibly as a separate amendment. now this effort was sparked by the newtown school shooting in december and since then, we have seen a surge in applications for gun permits across this country. according to the fbi we saw a record 19 1/2 million background checks for firearms last year. nearly three million of them coming in december alone. that is the most for any month on record. and more than 7 million from december through february. that is a 54% increase from the previous year. this national trend is echoed in the microcosm of newtown, connecticut. where law enforcement say they have seen the pace of applications for gun permits double. so what does this all mean for the gun control debate, an effort going forward? joining me fox news political analyst jua
